IVECS. Interactively Correcting .STL Files in a Virtual Environment

چکیده
Free Form Fabrication (FFF) machines transform objects merely existing as Os or 1s in a computer into a tangible object. FFF machines shift the paradigm of standard 2 Dimensional printers/paper printouts to 3 Dimensional printers/volumetric printouts (or 3D hardcopies). Currently, this technology is weakened by the link between computers and FFF machines: the .STL file, which contains a series of triangles representing the skin of the object to be prototyped. A prototype, reflecting precisely the evolution of a concept within a design cycle and allowing a systematic inspection/verification, is essential. A system responding to this need was designed at Clemson University for the inspection and the correction of such a file. IVECS, the Interactive Virtual Environment for the Correction of .STL files, is a tool that allows minute surgery to be performed on faulty tessellated models. IVECS allows STL files to be imported, tessellation errors to be detected and automatically or manually fixed. This paper expands on the use of IVECS for the inspection and the correction of .STL files. It extends the usefulness of the STL format by allowing designers to virtually prototype before actually building a physical model, thus contributing to a shorter design cycle.

A new database approach to improve STL files correction algorithms
A STL file format contains a series of triangles representing the surface model of the part that are being made by Free Form Fabrication technologies. However, recently this file format is being used to interrogate and transfer data between different CAD/ CAM /CAE systems. There are many inherent defects associated with STL files, such as gaps, incorrect normal vectors, overlapping facet, non-m...
متن کاملLine of Sight Method for Tracker Calibration in Projection-Based VR Systems
This paper describes a method for correcting static errors in the position component of a 6-degree-of-freedom tracker in a projection-based VR system. This method allows users to observe where errors in the environment are signiicant and correct them interactively. Later touch-up correction is possible as well. This technique is based on superimposing targets in physical space with their virtua...
متن کاملDevelopment of three-dimensional patient face model that enables real-time collision detection and cutting operation for a dental simulator.
The virtual reality (VR) simulator is a useful tool to develop dental hand skill. However, VR simulations with reactions of patients have limited computational time to reproduce a face model. Our aim was to develop a patient face model that enables real-time collision detection and cutting operation by using stereolithography (STL) and deterministic finite automaton (DFA) data files. We evaluat...
